A tooth extraction is a dental procedure that removes a tooth from its socket in the gum. It's also sometimes called "pulling" a tooth.
A dentist or oral surgeon usually performs a tooth extraction. The procedure can be done for a number of reasons, including: Tooth decay or infection, Impacted teeth, Dental overcrowding, and Trauma.
There are two types of tooth extractions:
Used for teeth that are loose or not impacted in the gums. The dentist uses instruments to remove the tooth without making any incisions.
Used for impacted teeth, teeth that have broken through the gum line, or teeth that have been split in two. The dentist makes an incision to reach the tooth and remove it.
After the extraction, dentist will advise you on what to do. You can expect some bleeding, which is usually normal. The socket will fill in with a blood clot, and the bone will slowly heal over 1 to 2 weeks.
